Tools for Early Incident Detection

Technologies for detecting attacks in time

Detecting an incident in its early stages drastically reduces the potential damage, and to achieve this organizations rely on tools such as endpoint detection and response systems, security information and event management platforms, and network anomaly detection solutions that correlate scattered signals into actionable alerts. In practice, having these tools installed doesn't guarantee early detection if they aren't properly tuned, since a poorly configured system generates so many false positives that analysts end up ignoring legitimate alerts out of fatigue, a phenomenon that has allowed real attackers to go unnoticed for weeks even though the tool did generate the correct alert. An important nuance is that no tool replaces knowledge of the organization's normal environment, because anomaly detection depends on having a clear baseline of expected behavior, and without it the system can't distinguish between unusual legitimate activity and a real sign of compromise.
