Classifying Incident Severity and Impact
Prioritizing incidents by severity
Classifying an incident's severity and impact makes it possible to prioritize limited resources when facing multiple simultaneous events, ensuring the team focuses first on what really threatens the business's critical operations. In practice, a severity matrix combines factors such as the number of affected systems, whether sensitive data is involved, the estimated financial impact and whether there's regulatory or reputational risk, instead of relying solely on the intuition of the analyst on duty. An incident that technically seems minor, such as a single device infected with generic malware, can escalate to critical severity if that device belongs to an administrator with privileged access to financial systems. That's why classification shouldn't be static: it must be reassessed as the investigation reveals new information, avoiding the mistake of keeping an incident at low severity for hours just because that's how it was classified in the first report, when the evidence already points to something much more serious.
