What a Technology Investigation Is and Its Scope

Definition, objectives and scope limits

A technology investigation is the structured process of collecting, analyzing and documenting digital evidence to reconstruct facts related to an incident, fraud, information leak or any situation where technology played a relevant role. Unlike incident response, whose main goal is to contain and restore operations, the investigation seeks to establish what happened, how and who was involved, with a standard of proof sufficient to support conclusions before leadership, legal or external authorities. Defining the scope from the start is critical in practice, because a poorly scoped investigation can spend weeks reviewing irrelevant systems or, conversely, leave out key evidence sources that are later impossible to recover. For example, deciding on day one whether the scope includes only the compromised endpoint or also the associated network infrastructure and cloud accounts radically changes the work plan, the resources needed and the case's realistic timelines.
