Tracing Cryptocurrency Transactions and Addresses

Cryptocurrencies aren't as anonymous as they seem

Many attackers choose cryptocurrencies to receive ransom payments or sell stolen data, assuming they offer absolute anonymity, but blockchains such as Bitcoin are actually public ledgers where every transaction is permanently recorded, which allows specialized investigators to trace the movement of funds with remarkable precision using blockchain analysis tools. The technique combines following addresses across multiple transactions, identifying clustering patterns that suggest several addresses belong to the same entity, and cross-referencing with databases that associate known addresses with specific exchanges or services, at which point, if that exchange complies with know-your-customer regulations, the real identity behind the transaction may be revealed. In practice, the most sophisticated attackers use cryptocurrency mixers or privacy-enhanced coins such as Monero to make this tracing harder, but each additional layer of obfuscation they use also adds operational friction that reduces their own efficiency in moving and cashing out the stolen money.
