Analyzing Attacker Infrastructure (Domains, IPs, Servers)
Tracing the infrastructure behind an attack
Every digital attack needs infrastructure to operate, whether command-and-control domains, servers hosting malware or IP addresses used to exfiltrate stolen data, and analyzing that infrastructure is one of the most productive techniques for identifying patterns and, eventually, attributing an attack to a specific actor. Techniques such as analyzing historical WHOIS records, identifying SSL certificates reused across different campaigns or studying domain registration patterns, such as names generated with the same algorithm or registered with the same provider and email address, make it possible to link seemingly isolated incidents to the same operation. In practice, sophisticated attackers constantly rotate their infrastructure and use anonymization services to make this tracing harder, but they rarely manage to completely hide operational habits, such as reusing the same certificate template or the same hosting provider despite changing domains, habits an experienced analyst learns to recognize as the group's digital fingerprints.
