Automating Tasks with SOAR

SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) platforms make it possible to chain repetitive actions, such as enriching an alert with threat intelligence, blocking a malicious IP or isolating a compromised endpoint, without an analyst having to carry out each step manually. The practical value lies in freeing human time for analysis that really requires judgment, while the automated playbook handles the mechanical tasks that consume valuable minutes in every incident. However, automating badly can be worse than not automating: a poorly tested playbook that automatically blocks IP addresses without proper validation can end up disrupting legitimate services or, in the worst case, alerting the attacker that they've been detected before the team finishes the investigation. Effective automation starts with well-documented, mature manual processes, which are then translated into playbooks tested in controlled environments before being deployed to production, always prioritizing high-volume, low-ambiguity cases.
