Selecting Tools: SIEM, SOAR, EDR/XDR
How to choose between SIEM, SOAR, EDR and XDR
SIEM, SOAR, EDR and XDR solve different problems, and confusing them leads to buying redundant tools or leaving gaps uncovered. The SIEM centralizes and correlates events from multiple sources to generate alerts; the SOAR automates the response and orchestrates actions across tools to reduce the analyst's reaction time; the EDR provides endpoint-level visibility and containment, while the XDR extends that visibility to network, cloud and identity under a single console. The practical choice depends less on vendors' spec sheets and more on the team's maturity: a small SOC without enough analysts benefits more from a well-tuned XDR than from a powerful but poorly configured SIEM, because the latter requires ongoing detection engineering to avoid drowning in false positives. Evaluating the total cost of operation, not just the license, is what avoids buying a tool that ends up underused.
