Defining the SOC's Technology Architecture

How to design the SOC's technology architecture

A SOC's technology architecture defines which data sources are collected, how they're transported, where they're stored and which tools process that information to generate useful alerts. Designing it well is harder than it seems because it involves decisions that directly affect cost and detection capability for years: how much log retention is needed for forensic investigations, whether processing happens in the cloud or on-premises, and how to scale data ingestion without SIEM licensing costs skyrocketing. A frequent mistake is designing the architecture around the trendy technology without first mapping which critical assets require priority visibility; the result is a SOC that receives millions of irrelevant events while a critical server remains outside the scope of monitoring. A mature architecture prioritizes data sources according to the real business risk, not according to ease of integration.
