Services and Scope of a Modern SOC

What services a modern SOC really covers

A modern SOC is no longer limited to watching a screen of alerts: its typical scope includes continuous monitoring, threat detection, incident response, vulnerability management, proactive threat hunting and, increasingly, threat intelligence applied to the business context. Defining that scope precisely matters because many organizations assume their SOC covers functions that were never actually sized or budgeted, which creates a false sense of security. For example, a team may believe its SOC manages critical patches when in reality it only raises alerts about them, leaving remediation in the hands of another area that doesn't always act with the expected urgency. Explicitly documenting which services the SOC provides, with what service levels and what falls outside its responsibility, is what makes it possible to measure its performance fairly and avoid coverage gaps between teams.
