SOC Models: In-House, Hybrid and Outsourced (MSSP)
Advantages and limits of each SOC model
Choosing between an in-house SOC, a hybrid one or one fully outsourced to a managed security service provider (MSSP) is one of the most important structural decisions in the security strategy, and there's no universally correct answer. An in-house SOC offers full control and deep knowledge of the business, but requires sustained investment in qualified staff, which is hard in markets with talent shortages. An MSSP reduces the initial cost and enables 24/7 coverage from day one, although it introduces dependence on a third party that rarely knows the critical context of each application as an in-house analyst would. The hybrid model, increasingly common, keeps sensitive functions such as incident response and threat hunting within the organization, while delegating low-level monitoring to the external provider, seeking to balance cost, speed of implementation and control over critical decisions.
