Tools and Technology Needed for Operations

The CSIRT's basic technology stack

Technology doesn't replace process, but a CSIRT without the right tools loses valuable time on manual tasks during an incident. The basic stack usually includes a ticketing or case management system to record and track each incident, a SIEM platform to centralize and correlate alerts, forensic and memory analysis tools to investigate compromised devices, and a secure communication channel separate from the corporate infrastructure, in case the latter is compromised. It's also advisable to have playbook templates, the team's own repository of indicators of compromise and access to external threat intelligence sources. The priority isn't accumulating tools, but making sure each one has a clear purpose within the already defined response process.
