Quality, Traceability and Trust in Organizational Data

Quality and traceability as the basis of trust

Data security isn't limited to preventing unauthorized access; it also depends on information being accurate, up to date and traceable in its origin and transformations over time. Without that traceability it's impossible to trust the decisions made based on that data, or to determine the real scope of an incident when it occurs. A sensitive piece of data misclassified by mistake, or an outdated copy circulating in parallel with the correct version, creates risks as real as improper access: business decisions based on incorrect information, or security controls applied to the wrong version of the data. Establishing data lineage, documenting each transformation from the source to the final report, and continuously validating quality isn't just an analytics practice; it's a security requirement that makes it possible to answer with certainty the most basic question in any incident: exactly which data was compromised.
