Responding to Data Exposure Incidents
How to respond to a data exposure
When a data exposure occurs, the speed and order of the response determine much of the final impact: containing the source of the exposure, assessing which data and how many people were affected, preserving evidence for forensic analysis, and notifying the relevant parties within the deadlines required by applicable regulations, which in many countries are just 72 hours from detection. A response plan specific to data incidents, distinct from a generic cybersecurity plan, should include clear criteria for determining the incident's severity and communication templates already prepared for customers, regulators and the media, so the organization doesn't improvise its message under pressure. A recurring mistake is for the legal and technical teams to work disconnected from each other during the incident, which delays both technical containment and timely notification, worsening the real impact and the regulatory consequences.
