Organizational Policies for the Secure Use of AI
How to define internal AI use policies
Without a clear policy, AI use within an organization tends to advance chaotically, with teams adopting tools independently, without risk assessment or control over what information is shared with external services. A secure AI use policy should define which tools are approved, what type of data may or may not be processed in them, who authorizes the adoption of a new model or service, and what minimum security and privacy controls are required before integrating it into a business process. It should also address so-called shadow AI, employees' use of AI tools without the security area's knowledge or approval, which represents one of the most common data leak vectors today. Communicating the policy clearly and pairing it with training is as important as writing it, because a policy nobody knows reduces no risk.
