Principles of Responsible and Transparent AI
Key principles of responsible AI
Responsible AI isn't just a statement of good intentions, but a set of operational principles that includes transparency about how and with what data a model was trained, explainability of its decisions to those who receive them, accountability for who is responsible when something fails, and fairness in how different groups of users are treated. Applying these principles in practice means documenting the purpose and limitations of each model through model cards, establishing mechanisms for a person to question or appeal an automated decision, and avoiding the use of AI in contexts where its opacity creates a disproportionate risk. A common example is scoring or prioritization models used in hiring or credit processes, where the lack of explainability not only creates distrust but may constitute regulatory non-compliance in jurisdictions that require justifying automated decisions.
