Social Engineering Fundamentals

Why Humans Are the Main Target

Why they attack people, not systems

Technical systems can be patched, but human behavior responds to psychological patterns that are much harder to "update": we trust authority figures, we want to help when someone seems to need it, and we act faster and with less judgment under time pressure. That's why it's usually easier and cheaper for an attacker to convince a person to hand over a password than to breach a well-configured firewall. This is the reason social engineering remains, year after year, one of the most effective attack vectors in real security incidents, no matter how much an organization invests in technology. No tool replaces the judgment of a person trained to detect when something doesn't add up, however urgent or convincing it seems.
