Driving Awareness Programs

How leadership drives security culture

A security awareness program seeks to make every person in the organization understand their role in protecting the company, from recognizing a phishing email to reporting suspicious behavior, but these programs usually fail when they're treated as a mandatory annual course and nothing more. Leadership's role here is decisive, because when an executive visibly takes part in the training and reinforces the messages in all-hands meetings, the rest of the organization understands that security really matters and isn't just a compliance formality. An effective example is for leadership to openly share when they themselves nearly fell for an internal phishing simulation, because that shared vulnerability humanizes the message and encourages employees to report their own mistakes without fear of being singled out or sanctioned.
