Security Contracts and Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
Security clauses in contracts with third parties
Including clear security clauses in contracts and service level agreements with vendors makes it possible to define in writing what's expected of them regarding data protection, incident response times and responsibilities in the event of a leak, instead of assuming they "surely have it handled" without any contractual evidence. These agreements are the tool that gives the company real ability to demand compliance and, if necessary, financial compensation when a vendor fails to protect the information entrusted to it. A practical element that's often missing is specifying within how many hours the vendor must notify if it detects an incident involving the company's data, because without that deadline defined contractually, the business may find out about a breach weeks later, when it's too late to react effectively.
