Data Monetization and Its Ethical and Legal Risks

The risks of selling or sharing user data

Many business models depend on monetizing the data users generate, whether by selling it to third parties, using it for targeted advertising or building behavioral profiles, but each of these practices involves ethical and legal risks that go beyond whether it's technically possible. The key question any business team should ask isn't just whether the law allows it, but whether the user would reasonably expect that use of their information when they accepted the terms and conditions, because the gap between the two is where the costliest reputational scandals are born. A real example is companies that shared "anonymized" location data with advertising partners, without anticipating that the data could be cross-referenced with other public information to identify specific people, leading to legal and image consequences that far exceeded the revenue that monetization had generated.
