Risk Assessment for New Features
How to analyze risk before launching features
Before launching a new feature, assessing its security risk means asking what could go wrong, who might try to abuse it and how serious the impact would be if that happened, an analysis that should take place in the planning stage and not as a last-minute obstacle before launch. This practice is especially important when the new feature involves payments, sensitive data or changes to user permissions, because those are the areas where a design mistake can quickly turn into a vulnerability exploitable at scale. A typical example is launching a "share profile with a public link" feature without assessing that, if that link doesn't expire and can't be revoked, anyone who ever gets it will have indefinite access to information the user assumed was private.
