Reputational Impact of Security Incidents

How security incidents damage reputation

A security incident, such as a data leak or a ransomware attack, doesn't just have a technical and financial cost; it directly hits the trust customers placed in the brand, and that trust usually takes much longer to rebuild than the affected systems. Reputational impact is measured in things like the drop in sales after the news, the increase in customer cancellations or negative media coverage, factors that often exceed the real cost of the original technical incident. A well-known example is when a data leak is made public weeks after it was detected, because then customers are upset not only by the attack itself, but by feeling the company hid information they were entitled to know immediately.
