Consequences of Mishandling Sensitive Information

What can happen when data is mishandled

Mishandling sensitive information rarely seems serious at the time, such as sending a file to the wrong person or leaving a document open on a shared computer, but the consequences of those slips can be much deeper than you might imagine at first. For the organization, a leak can mean legal penalties, lost contracts, reputational damage with customers and years rebuilding trust that was lost in a matter of minutes. For the people whose information was exposed, the consequences can range from financial fraud to harassment or discrimination, depending on the type of data leaked, and those people rarely have a way to repair it themselves once the damage is done. On an individual level, whoever handled the information negligently may also face their own employment or legal consequences, which makes it clear that understanding these consequences isn't a theoretical exercise, but a concrete motivation to take every everyday decision about how sensitive data is handled seriously.
