Information Classification (Public, Internal, Confidential, Restricted)
The levels that define how to protect each piece of data
Classifying information according to its level of sensitivity, usually in categories such as public, internal, confidential and restricted, helps you know immediately how to treat each document without having to evaluate it case by case from scratch. Public information is what the organization shares openly, such as marketing material, while internal information circulates only within the company without being secret, such as an employee directory. Confidential information requires stricter protection because its exposure would harm the organization or individuals, such as contracts or customer data, and restricted information is the most delicate, reserved only for a very small group of people because of its high impact if leaked, such as critical financial strategies. Knowing these levels lets you decide quickly, for example, whether a file can be sent by regular email or needs additional encryption, and many organizations already label their documents with this classification, so learning to read and interpret those labels is the first practical step before sharing any information.
