Periodic Review and Update of the Risk Methodology

Subjecting the method itself to periodic review

The methodology with which an organization identifies, assesses and treats its risks isn't a static document, and reviewing it periodically makes it possible to detect whether the likelihood and impact criteria are still relevant in the face of a constantly changing threat landscape and business context. This review involves assessing whether the defined risk categories still cover the real scenarios the organization faces, whether the tolerance thresholds are still aligned with leadership's current risk appetite, and whether the assessment process adequately captures emerging risks that didn't exist when the original methodology was designed, such as those associated with newly adopted technologies. In practice, many organizations discover during this review that their methodology favors technical risks that are easy to measure over operational or third-party risks that are harder to quantify but equally relevant, a bias that can only be corrected with an honest, recurring self-assessment of the framework itself.
