Prioritizing Risks by Business Impact
Address what affects the business most first
An organization never has enough resources to treat every identified risk at the same time, so prioritizing them by their real business impact, and not just by their technical severity, is what makes it possible to invest the security budget where it truly reduces exposure. This prioritization combines the likelihood of the risk materializing with the concrete consequences it would have, such as lost revenue, regulatory penalties, operational disruption or reputational damage, instead of relying solely on a technical vulnerability score such as CVSS. In practice, a risk with a moderate technical score that affects a process generating sixty percent of the company's revenue should be treated before a critical vulnerability in an isolated system with no significant business impact. This prioritization logic is also what makes it possible to justify to leadership why certain technically serious risks are temporarily put on the back burner in favor of other business risks.
