Managing Finding Remediation Plans

Closing compliance gaps in an orderly way

When an audit or compliance assessment identifies a gap, managing the associated remediation plan involves much more than noting the pending action in a spreadsheet; it requires assigning a formal owner, a negotiated and realistic deadline, and a tracking mechanism that lets the organization know at all times how many findings are still open and which are about to expire. In practice, this management is usually centralized in a GRC tool or risk register that links each finding to the regulatory requirement it fails to meet, so that at the next audit full traceability can be shown between the original finding, the actions taken and the evidence of closure. An important nuance is distinguishing between remediating the specific symptom, such as fixing a particular configuration, and remediating the root cause, such as the absence of a periodic review process, because only the latter prevents the same finding from reappearing in the next assessment.
