Regulatory Framework Applicable to Cybersecurity
Landscape of the rules governing the sector
The cybersecurity regulatory landscape combines voluntary technical standards, such as ISO 27001 or NIST CSF, with mandatory legal regulations that vary by country and sector, such as GDPR for personal data in Europe, specific financial regulations or local data protection laws, and understanding this distinction is key because failing to comply with a voluntary standard means losing a certification, while failing to comply with a law can lead to direct financial penalties. Knowing which framework applies to a specific organization depends on factors such as its sector, the location of its customers and the type of data it processes, not on a generic list valid for every company alike. In practice, the starting point of any compliance program is an up-to-date inventory of the applicable standards and laws, reviewed periodically, because operating on the assumption that the regulatory framework of three years ago is still in force unchanged is one of the most common causes of compliance gaps.
