Identifying Critical Areas and Processes to Audit
Focusing resources where the impact is greatest
Since audit time and budget are always limited, identifying beforehand which areas and processes are critical makes it possible to direct effort to where a failure would have the greatest business impact, instead of spreading attention evenly across all processes. This identification is usually based on the organization's risk map, the value of the information assets involved and the history of previous incidents or findings, prioritizing processes that handle regulated data, internet-facing systems or functions that support key business revenue. In practice, this prioritization should be reviewed with the business and not defined solely by the audit team, because criteria such as regulatory criticality or reputational exposure are often only visible to those who know the real operational context, and don't appear in a technical system inventory.
