Reference Frameworks for Audits (COBIT, ISACA)
COBIT as a structure for auditing IT
COBIT, developed by ISACA, is the most widely used reference framework for structuring IT and cybersecurity audits because it connects business objectives with the governance and management processes that must exist to achieve them, making it possible to assess not only whether a control exists but whether it's aligned with what the organization really needs. Unlike purely technical standards, COBIT organizes the auditor's work into domains such as evaluate, direct and monitor, or build, acquire and implement, which makes it easier to map findings to concrete responsibilities within the organizational structure. Using it in practice means selecting the COBIT processes relevant to the audit scope, instead of trying to cover the whole framework, and complementing it with ISACA guidance such as specific audit programs, which offer detailed tests and evaluation criteria already validated by the professional community.
