Zero Trust Model Principles: Never Trust, Always Verify

Explicit verification as the basis of the model

The principle "never trust, always verify" sums up the core philosophy of Zero Trust, which consists of treating every access attempt as potentially hostile, regardless of whether it comes from the internal network, from an employee with years of seniority or from a previously authenticated server. In practice this translates into explicit verification on every request, using the minimum privilege needed for each task, and constantly assuming a breach has already occurred, which forces controls to be designed with containing damage in mind instead of only preventing entry. This approach matters because it reduces the impact of stolen credentials or compromised devices, since an attacker who manages to authenticate doesn't automatically gain broad access, but must pass additional context checks, such as location, device status or the user's usual behavior, before touching each resource.
