Main Security Risks in Cloud Environments

The most frequent risks when operating in the cloud

Cloud environments concentrate a set of risks different from those of traditional infrastructure, not because the cloud is inherently less secure, but because its dynamic, self-service nature makes it easy to make human errors with broad impact. Misconfigurations top the list, such as public storage buckets or overly permissive network rules, followed by poor identity management with excessive privileges that an attacker can escalate quickly if they compromise a single credential. Poorly protected programming interfaces are also common, as is the lack of visibility when different business areas deploy cloud resources without going through central security control, known as shadow IT in the cloud. Knowing these risks matters because it makes it possible to prioritize controls by their real likelihood of occurring. A recurring example is a developer who creates a storage bucket for testing with public access enabled for convenience, which ends up exposed for months without anyone detecting it.
