OWASP Top 10 and Common Application Vulnerabilities

The most critical vulnerabilities in web applications

The OWASP Top 10 is the most widely recognized reference worldwide on the most critical categories of vulnerabilities in web applications, periodically updated based on real data collected from organizations and security tools around the world, which makes it a mandatory starting point for any team that wants to prioritize its security effort with evidence-based criteria. The list includes categories such as broken access control, cryptographic failures, code injection and security misconfiguration, and its value isn't just in naming these categories but in explaining why they keep appearing year after year despite being widely known, usually because of time pressure in development, lack of specific testing or teams' unfamiliarity with secure coding patterns. A practical, effective use of this list is to incorporate it directly into developer training and code review criteria, not to treat it only as a reference document consulted occasionally. It's worth remembering that the Top 10 represents the most common categories, not an exhaustive list, so a robust AppSec program uses it as a minimum baseline and complements it with analysis specific to each application's context and architecture.
