Writing Intelligence Reports for Different Audiences
Adapting reports to who reads them
The same threat intelligence finding must be presented differently depending on the audience, because a SOC analyst needs actionable technical indicators immediately, while an executive needs to understand the potential business impact and what decision is expected of them. In practice, this means producing the same analysis in different formats, from a tactical report with hashes, IP addresses and detection rules for the technical team, to an executive summary of a few paragraphs explaining the risk in business terms for leadership. A common mistake is sending the same dense technical document to every audience, which results in executives ignoring it as unreadable and technical analysts wasting time looking for the actionable data among context explanations they already knew. Structuring the report with an executive summary at the beginning, followed by technical details in appendices, lets each reader find exactly the level of depth they need without having to read the whole document.
