What a Security Incident Is and How It's Classified
Definition and types of security incidents
A security incident is any event that compromises the confidentiality, integrity or availability of an organization's information or systems, whether because of an external attack, an internal error or a technical failure with security consequences. Classifying incidents correctly from the very first moment is essential because it determines which team responds, with what urgency and following which protocol, avoiding both overreacting to minor events and underestimating incidents that are actually critical. Common categories include malware, unauthorized access, denial of service, data leaks and account compromise, each with different indicators and response procedures. In practice, the same initial symptom, such as a user reporting a slow computer, can end up classified as a simple performance problem or as an early-stage ransomware incident, and the difference only becomes clear with proper triage that takes nothing for granted before investigating.
