Investigation Reporting and Closure

Recommendations and Formal Case Closure

Closing the case with concrete actions

Formally closing an investigation doesn't end with handing over the report, but with defining actionable recommendations that prevent the same type of incident from happening again and with explicitly documenting that the case was resolved. In practice, recommendations must be specific and assignable to an owner, avoiding generic phrases such as "improve security" that nobody knows how to carry out or measure; it's better to indicate, for example, that multi-factor authentication must be implemented on a specific system identified as the entry point. Formal closure also requires preserving the evidence and documentation for as long as internal policy or applicable law requires, and informing stakeholders that the case is considered closed, including any limitation or pending finding that couldn't be resolved for lack of evidence. Skipping this step leaves cases in limbo where nobody knows whether the corrective actions were actually implemented.
