Identifying Patterns and the Actors Involved

Detecting patterns and attributing responsibility

Identifying patterns in the collected evidence makes it possible to move from a list of isolated events to a coherent narrative of how the actor involved operated, what techniques they used and whether their behavior matches known groups or modus operandi. In practice, this means looking for repetitions in activity hours, tools used, IP addresses or reused infrastructure, and comparing those patterns against available threat intelligence to see whether they fit an already documented actor. Attributing responsibility, whether to an insider or an external group, requires a much higher level of evidence than simply detecting the malicious activity, because the consequences of a wrong attribution can be serious legally or reputationally. An important nuance is that technical attribution, based on digital indicators, is rarely enough on its own to point to a specific person without complementary evidence such as physical access records or testimony that corroborates the technical conclusion.
