Identifying Sources of Digital Evidence

Where to look for relevant digital traces

Correctly identifying sources of digital evidence is the step that determines whether an investigation has enough material to reach solid conclusions or falls short for not having looked in the right place. Sources go far beyond the obvious device of the suspect or affected person: they include server logs, authentication records, captured network traffic, backups, file metadata, cloud application histories and even peripheral devices such as USB drives or personal phones connected to the corporate network. In practice, each source's volatility matters as much as its existence, because data such as RAM or active network connections disappear within minutes if not captured in time, while logs may rotate and be overwritten within hours depending on the system's configuration. An experienced investigator prioritizes the most volatile sources first and only then moves on to the more stable ones, thus avoiding losing irrecoverable evidence while documenting what can wait.
