Cybercrime Actors: Individual, Organized and State-Sponsored

Not all attackers have the same profile

Understanding who's behind an attack completely changes how it's investigated and what response is proportionate. An individual actor, often motivated by notoriety or quick gains, usually leaves less sophisticated traces and uses publicly available tools, which makes them easier to identify with relatively standard investigation techniques. Organized groups, on the other hand, operate with almost corporate structures, with specialized roles ranging from malware development to laundering the proceeds, and usually reinvest in resilient infrastructure that makes complete dismantling difficult. State-sponsored actors represent the most complex level: they have practically unlimited resources, long-term strategic objectives beyond immediate economic benefit, and usually operate with legal impunity within the borders of the country that backs them, which makes international cooperation to prosecute them extremely limited in practice, even when the technical attribution is solid.
