Writing Forensic Expert Reports

The report that turns technical work into legal proof

The forensic expert report is the bridge between technical analysis and its use as legal evidence, which is why it must be written for a reader who doesn't necessarily master technical terminology, without sacrificing the rigor needed to hold up in court. A well-built report includes a clear description of the methodology used, the complete chain of custody of the evidence analyzed, the findings presented objectively and clearly separated from any interpretation or opinion of the expert, and detailed technical appendices for those who do need that level of depth. In practice, mixing verifiable facts with subjective interpretations without clearly distinguishing them is one of the mistakes that most weakens a report before a judge, because it opens the door for the opposing party to question the objectivity of the whole document. A good expert report lets any reader, regardless of their technical level, understand exactly what was found, how it was found and what that finding means within the case.
