Coordinating with the Blue Team and Purple Team Exercises

When attack and defense collaborate, not just compete

Traditionally, the red team attacks without warning the defensive team in order to measure its real detection capability, while the blue team limits itself to defending. A purple team exercise deliberately breaks that separation: both teams collaborate in real time, the red team carries out a specific technique and the blue team immediately checks whether it detected it, what alert it generated and with what latency, adjusting detection rules on the fly instead of waiting for a final report weeks later. This collaboration speeds up mutual learning because it turns each simulated attack into an opportunity for immediate improvement instead of just a documented finding. In practice, many organizations discover in these exercises that they have the technology needed to detect a technique but the correlation rule was never configured correctly, something a traditional red team would have reported as a simple finding, while a purple team turns it into a fix applied that same day.
