Recognized Methodologies (OSSTMM, PTES, OWASP)
Frameworks that standardize and validate a pentest
Following a recognized methodology such as OSSTMM, PTES or OWASP isn't an academic formality; it's what makes a pentest repeatable, auditable and comparable across different providers. OSSTMM (Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual) brings a rigorous, measurable approach, useful when the security level needs to be quantified objectively; PTES (Penetration Testing Execution Standard) defines a complete process from the initial interaction with the client to the delivery of the report, covering aspects many improvised pentesters omit, such as the prior intelligence phase; and OWASP focuses specifically on web applications, with detailed testing guides by vulnerability type. In practice, a client who requires the provider to document which methodology it followed and at which phase each finding was made can compare the quality of the work across providers year after year, something impossible when each consultant improvises their own process without any reference standard.
