Measuring and Improving the SOC

Periodic Evaluation of SOC Effectiveness

Measuring whether the SOC is really working

A SOC can operate for years generating reports and alerts without anyone verifying whether it's actually stopping threats or just producing activity that looks good on a dashboard. Periodic effectiveness evaluation aims to close that gap through exercises that test the real detection and response capability, such as controlled attack simulations, purple team exercises where an offensive team carries out known techniques while the SOC tries to detect them, or coverage audits against a framework such as MITRE ATT&CK. In practice, these evaluations usually reveal uncomfortable surprises: common attack techniques no correlation rule covers, or data sources that stopped being ingested months ago without anyone noticing. Scheduling these evaluations regularly, and not only after a serious incident, is what makes it possible to fix those gaps before a real attacker exploits them.
