Organizational Models for Response Teams

How to structure a response team

There's no single valid model for organizing an incident response team; the choice depends on the organization's size, budget and maturity. The centralized model concentrates the whole team in a single unit, which makes control and process consistency easier but can become a bottleneck in large organizations. The distributed model spreads responsibilities across different areas or regions, gaining closeness to the business at the expense of coordination. The coordinating model doesn't carry out the response directly, but orchestrates third-party teams or teams from different units, something typical of sector or national CSIRTs. The hybrid model, which combines a central core with distributed capabilities, is also common. Choosing well avoids duplicating efforts or leaving areas without coverage.
