Intelligence Sharing Standards (STIX/TAXII)
Standard formats for sharing intelligence
STIX and TAXII are the most widely adopted standards for structuring and exchanging threat intelligence between organizations and tools in an automated way, solving the problem of each team describing indicators and threat context in its own ad hoc format, impossible to process at scale. STIX defines the structured language for describing objects such as indicators, actors, attack techniques and the relationships between them, while TAXII defines the transport protocol for sharing that data between platforms securely and automatically. In practice, adopting these standards makes it possible for an alert generated by a commercial feed to be integrated directly into a SIEM or intelligence platform without manual rewriting, drastically shortening the time between an indicator's publication and its application in detection. The important nuance is that the quality of the exchange depends on how well the context is labeled, since an indicator without confidence or validity metadata can end up blocking legitimate traffic if applied without additional judgment.
