Differences between CSIRT, SIRT and CERT

CSIRT, SIRT and CERT: how are they different?

The three terms are often used as synonyms, but they aren't. CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) is the oldest name, originating at Carnegie Mellon University, and in several countries use of the name is restricted or requires authorization. CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) is the generic and most widely used term today for describing a formal team dedicated to managing security incidents. SIRT (Security Incident Response Team) usually refers to teams with a narrower scope, often internal to a single organization or business unit, without the external coordination requirements that characterize a national or sector CSIRT. In practice, what matters isn't the name but the mandate, the services offered and whom the team answers to: that's what defines its real role within the organization.
