Cyber Risk Identification Methodologies
Techniques for discovering risks before they happen
Systematically identifying cyber risks requires combining several complementary methodologies, such as identification workshops with process owners, scenario analysis based on known threats in the sector, review of the organization's own and the industry's historical incidents, and technical threat modeling of specific systems and architectures, since no single technique captures an organization's entire risk landscape. A purely technical approach focused on system vulnerabilities, for example, tends to overlook process or third-party risks that don't show up in a scan but have historically caused serious incidents, such as a critical dependence on a vendor with no contingency plan. In practice, risk identification isn't a one-off exercise but a recurring process, because the threat landscape and the organization's own infrastructure change constantly, and a risk not identified in the last cycle can become next quarter's incident.
