Classifying Findings by Severity and Risk

Prioritizing findings by real impact

Not all audit findings deserve the same urgency, and classifying them by severity and risk lets the organization prioritize limited resources toward what matters most instead of treating every deviation as equally critical. A typical scale combines the likelihood of exploitation with the potential business impact, resulting in categories such as critical, high, medium and low, each with expected remediation deadlines and different escalation levels within the organization. The practical nuance is that the technical severity of a vulnerability doesn't always equal its real severity for the business: a critical flaw in an isolated system with no sensitive data may be classified as medium risk, while a moderate weakness in a process that touches regulated information may escalate to critical. This classification also lets risk committees compare findings across different audits using the same language.
