AppSec and DevSecOps Fundamentals

Application Security (AppSec) Principles

Conceptual foundations of application security

AppSec, or application security, is the discipline responsible for identifying, preventing and remediating vulnerabilities throughout an application's entire lifecycle, from initial design to operation in production, and it differs from traditional infrastructure security because its focus is on each system's own logic and code, not on the hardware or network supporting it. A fundamental principle of modern AppSec is that security can't be the exclusive responsibility of a separate team that reviews at the end of the process, because at that point fixing a design problem is much costlier than having avoided it from the start; the discipline requires integrating controls at every stage, from security requirements defined alongside functional requirements to automated tests in the deployment pipeline. Another central principle is defense in depth: assuming no individual control is infallible and therefore combining multiple layers (input validation, access control, encryption and monitoring) so the failure of a single layer doesn't compromise the whole system. Understanding these basic principles is what later makes it possible to understand why practices such as shift left or DevSecOps became the industry standard.
